👩⚕️ What is a Partial Nephrectomy?
A partial nephrectomy is a surgery where only the damaged or cancerous part of the kidney is removed, while the rest of the kidney is left in place. It’s also known as kidney-sparing surgery.
This procedure helps treat kidney tumors while preserving as much kidney function as possible.
❓ Why is it Done?
Doctors may recommend a partial nephrectomy if:
You have a small kidney tumor (usually less than 4–7 cm)
The tumor is in one kidney, or you have only one functioning kidney
You’re at risk of losing kidney function (e.g., due to diabetes, hypertension)
It’s important to preserve kidney function for long-term health
🛠️ How is the Surgery Performed?
You will be under general anesthesia (asleep).
The surgeon makes an incision (cut) through:
Open surgery (traditional)
Laparoscopy (keyhole)
Robotic-assisted surgery
The tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue are removed.
The remaining kidney is repaired and closed.
Sometimes a drain or catheter may be placed temporarily.
🕒 After the Surgery
You may stay in the hospital for 2–5 days.
You may have a catheter to drain urine for 1–2 days.
Pain and discomfort are expected but manageable with medication.
Recovery takes about 2–4 weeks for most people.
✅ Benefits of Partial Nephrectomy
Removes the tumor while saving healthy kidney tissue
Reduces risk of chronic kidney disease
Effective in treating many small kidney cancers
Quicker recovery (especially with robotic/laparoscopic methods)
